Memoir of Dr. Mead [sic], medical officer of Eppa Hunton's Brigade, George Edward Pickett's Division, Army of Northern Virginia, containing description of conditions of soldiers and accounts of campaigns.

Handwritten memoirs, probably of Confederate surgeon Hodijah Baylies Meade. describing his experiences in March and April 1865 during the Confederate retreat from Richmond and Petersburg. The author moved by railroad, horseback, and foot, in heavy rains and over rough terrain, but he recounts his arduous experiences with humor. One event, a March 21, 1865, review of Major General General George Pickett's division by Confederate Secretary of War John C. Breckenridge, is described twice with varying details. Also recounted are one of the misadventures of his black servant, Ned, and the reaction of his one-eyed black cook, Henry, to artillery fire. He also takes note of Pickett's engagement at Five Forks and describes an attack by three Confederate brigades against the Union Army V Corps.
